Luxating Patella Surgery: First Post-Op Vet Visit
Posted by in Paw PrintsToday Henry went to the vet to have his bandages removed. It’s been exactly one week since his surgery. He’s doing well, but very anxious to get up out of his crate. When the nurses brought him out, I saw his little pink legs dangling, with a million stitches all over. Fur, dried up blood, metal stitching and pink skin. It was not a pleasant site. I hesitated posting the photo below of his legs and was about to censor myself, but I thought I’d go ahead and do it anyway, because if anyone ever comes across this post and has a dog who will need luxating patella surgery and they want to see photos, it will be here for their reference. I know that before Henry has his surgery, I looked all over the web for photos, so it’s more helpful than hurtful. Plus, I’m not a fan of censorship. That being said, I’m putting the photo behind a cut for the faint of heart.
I know, it looks awful. There are other parts of his legs that are a bit scratched up, so I’ve put some ointment on those areas to help them heal. He ate a few blueberries when we got home, one of his favorite treats and now he’s sleeping. In fact, it’s time for his antibiotic right now. The fur on the sides of his mouth are semi-permanently pink because of the medicine. I just want him to be free and run and play and I know he will in the coming weeks, but its just so upsetting to see him so helpless like this.

I’m reading about your dog. He’s such a brave little guy to go through all these medical procedures. One of our dogs had surgery quite a while ago, I know that occasions like that really teach you a lot, taking care, not being squeamish at the sight of blood and stitches, and loving those little paws no matter what condition they are in, and it also makes the bond between you and your dog a lot stronger.
Thank you for posting this – my pup needs it and seeing this definitely helps!
Many thanks for this submit! However, I had issues viewing your article in Safari five. Just wished to convey that on your interest! Many thanks.
If you could e-mail me with a few hints on how you made your blog look this great, I would be grateful.
