Nitesh - I haven't actually seen any of the films you listed :( It seems as though I've started from the present and I'm slowly inching my way towards films of the past, so I haven't gotten there yet! I'll be sure to check them out though on your recommendation. I love that BBC write up, there are a lot of films on that list I wanted to include (like Om Shanti Om and Jodhaa Akbar) I'm so glad you like tea too! I'm Armenian from Iran, so tea holds a very special place in my heart too :)

Zin - Thanks for visiting and glad you liked the list. I love Dil Chahta Hai, it's one of my faves, it was actually on my list, but it didn't quite make the cut. I think the reason I didn't include it is because I felt that it was an "intermediate" film instead of a beginner film, mostly because of the deeper subject matter and lack of I suppose "typical" song and dance. If I write another list up, I'll definitely have to include it though!

Hi! I ended up at this blog post via Twitter! I'm a big fan of Bollywood too. Great list, but I would also include Dil Chahta Hai in there. I think it was the first Bollywood film that was meant primarily for an urban audience - without the usual melodrama. A highlight of it was one of the songs which is a hilarious spoof of the typical Bollywood song and dance routines (the 'Woh Ladki Hai Kahan' song). Have you seen the film? It's one of my favorites :)

Hi liana..

I like the way you structured those films. However, I'm sure Western audience will comprehend some of the classic Indian films too.

-Pakeezah- Kamal Amrohi
- Awara- Raj Kapoor
- Pyaasa- Guru Dutt
- Bandhini/Do Bigha Zameen- Bimal Roy
- Guide- Vijay Anand.
- Sholay- Ramesh Sippy

Just few classic, and I'm sure there are more that most Western audience would find easy to slip into.

BBC writeup on 50 Bollywood films:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/asiannetwork/bollywood/fiftyfilms/index.shtml

OFF: Having grown up in Darjeeling, India..Tea is something that I really love. Great to land up by chance on a fellow blogger who loves Tea.

Hi Nitesh!

I agree - however I structured the list to include films that would be easy for a Western audience to digest. There are just so many to choose from, which films do you think I should have mentioned?
